The Barcelona String Quartet Biennale was founded in 2020 at the initiative of the Cuarteto Casals and L’Auditori de Barcelona, with the aim of establishing the city as an international meeting point for the string quartet. Since then, its various editions have brought together some of the most outstanding ensembles on the international scene, combining major works from the repertoire with contemporary creation and fostering dialogue between different generations of performers.
The next edition will take place from 12 to 20 March 2027 and will be especially significant for the Cuarteto Casals, which returns to the artistic direction of the Biennale as the ensemble celebrates its 30th anniversary and the bicentenary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death.
The programme will bring together the Cuarteto Casals with the Modigliani Quartet, Cosmos Quartet, Leonkoro Quartet, Arete Quartet, Cuarteto Quiroga, Brentano String Quartet and Javus Quartett. One of its central themes will be Beethoven’s late quartets, performed by the various guest ensembles.
The Cuarteto Casals will also take part in the sessions devoted to Haydn and will conclude its appearances at the Biennale on 20 March with a programme featuring a new work by Raquel García-Tomás, Great Fugue by Beethoven and Death and the Maiden by Schubert.
In this way, the Biennale continues one of the fundamental strands of the Cuarteto Casals’ artistic trajectory: an understanding of the string quartet as a living repertoire, in constant dialogue between tradition, new perspectives and contemporary creation.
